This week is the International Week of Deaf People, which Alison is pleased to support and promote.
Aged 19, Alison caught bacterial meningitis. In a coma for a week, she lost 70% of her hearing. Although she knows she was lucky, she does have some understanding of the challenge that many children and adults experience when it comes to hearing loss.
The International Week of Deaf People is an initiative of the World Federation of the Deaf. It was first launched in 1958 in Rome, Italy.
It is celebrated annually by the global Deaf Community on the last week of September each year. It aims to shed light on the issues faced by the deaf community, promote their culture and achievements, and foster a more inclusive society.
The British Deaf Association is running the campaign #BSLinourhands to promote the idea of free sign language to children and adults. I am happy to support the campaign and would encourage everyone to sign the petition so I can take your views to Parliament: https://bda.org.uk/bsl-in-our-hands
